George Shumpert Estate Packet: 1853

Biographical Notes

George Shumpert immigrated to Itawamba County, Mississippi from Newberry District, South Carolina about 1840 with several other families. He was born December 1, 1790 in South Carolina and died March 19, 1852 in the Carolina community of Itawamba County.  He purchased 1,250 acres of land in the southwestern portion of the county on Boguegaba Creek where he operated a sizeable farm. He later purchased and additional 350 acres of land on Boguefala Creek nearby. Until his death he operated these farms where he produced cotton that was shipped down the Tombigbee River to Mobile, Alabama.

Know ye that George Shumpert deceased, late of our County of Itawamba, departed this life intestate ... grant unto Rhody Shumpert, Henry Shumpert and Baily Shumpert full power by the tenor of these presents, to administer all and singular the goods, chattles and credits which were of the said George Shumpert at the time of his death...

You are hereby commanded to summons Moses Robinson, Wm. Green, D.L. Black, G.W. Stovall and John Jenkins, as commissioners and then to qualify according to law ... to set off by metes and bounds to Rhody Shumpert, widow of George Shumpert, late of said county... one third part according to quality and quantity of the lands, tenements and hereditaments described in the anexed as the dower of the said widow to wit: SW 1/4 Section 7, the north 1/2 of the SE 1/4 Section 6 and NW 1/4 of Section 17 of Township 11, Range 8 East. Also Section 12 and the NE 1/4 Section 13, Township 11, Range 7 East, and that the said allotment be composed of the dwelling house in which the said decedent in his lifetime before his death was most accustomed to dwel together with the out houses, buildings and other improvements...
