Hiram Crayton Estate Ledger: 1857

Biographical Notes

Three Crayton men brought their families to Itawamba County from Alabama during the early 1840s. Thomas Crayton, Hiram Crayton and James W. Crayton. It is believed that Thomas Crayton and Hiram Crayton were brothers, as both were born in Tennessee and were of the same generation. James W. Crayton is thought to be the son of Thomas Crayton. Thomas and Hiram purchased nearly 3,000 acres of rich Donnivan Creek bottomlands in northwestern Itawamba County (present-day Kirkville community). By the 1850 census, Thomas was living near the village of Fulton, James W. was living at Richmond on a large farm in southwestern Itawamba County and Hiram continued to live on the Crayton farm on Donnivan Creek. Hiram Crayton's wife Lucinda Carter (born abt. 1820) died after the 1850 census and before Hiram's death in 1857. Hiram left a sizeable estate which was settled among his heirs over the next 4 years. Below is an abstract of a very small portion of his estate packet located in the Itawamba County Chancery Court Clerk's office.
